CIDOC Multimedia Working Group

This page introduces the Multimedia Working Group of the International Committee for Documentation of the International Council of Museums (ICOM-CIDOC). This is one of nine active Working Groups.

Report of Meeting, 26 September 1996, Nairobi, Kenya

Acting chair: Jan van der Starre (Jennifer Trant could not be present)
Present: 5 members

1. Overview of activities during the past year

Efforts have been concentrated on 2 topics:

At the Nairobi conference a workshop on the use of multimedia for documenting non-material culture was presented by Jan van der Starre. Efforts to have a workshop with hands-on experience and other presenters had not been successful, as the necessary funding could not be obtained. The workshop was attended by 17 participants.

The report Introduction to Multimedia in Museum was produced just in time (a first public version) for the Nairobi conference, both in hardcopy and on the Web. Funding was obtained from the Getty Information Institute and from CIDOC.

2. Plans for next year

The plans for next year are very ambitious.

2.1 Update of the MMWG report

It will be investigated how the present report could be updated and expanded. Jan van der Starre will contact the Getty with proposals, and investigate other possibilities. Already an offer has been received for a new chapter on ethics. Monika Hagedorn offered to produce German summaries of the various chapters.

2.2 Workshops at the Nurnberg conference

Plans exist for two workshops at the 1997 conference in Germany, one on quality of Multimedia systems, and one on practical aspects of documenting non-material culture/contemporary history. Jan van der Starre will draft proposals for these workshops with Anne Murray of Sweden and with Regine Scheffel of the Organising Committee in Germany.

2.3 Session at the Nurnberg conference

A special session could be staged during the conference on documentation of contemporary history/non-material culture, with special emphasis on ethics and metadata. Jan van der Starre will formulate a draft in cooperation with Anne Murray and Regine Scheffel.

2.4 Factsheet on Multimedia

Monika Hagedorn offered to produce a draft factsheet on Multimedia for the 1997 conference.

2.5 Metadata

The concept of metadata caused a lot of confusion. Mr. Trono Bjorli offered to draft a working paper on the subject, to be discussed at the 1997 conference.

3. Other topics

It was decided not to produce a newsletter anymore, but to concentrate on the CIDOC webpages.

Close contact should be maintained with AVICOM to ensure that no unnecessary overlap in activities exists.
