The Getty Information Institute became the new title of the Getty Art History Information Program from July 1996. The Institute closed at the end of June 1999, as part of a new strategic plan for the entire organization. Many of its Web resources are still available in other parts of the Getty Web Site. The Getty Research Institute for the History of Art and the Humanities has a Web service. November 1996.

CHIN has launched the CHIN Heritage Forum , an interactive journal designed to provide information for the heritage community. November 1996.

ISO/TC 46 /SC9 TC 46 is ISO's Technical Committee (TC) for information and documentation standards and SC 9 is the TC 46 Subcommittee (SC) that develops and maintains ISO standards on the identification and description of information resources

ISO/TC 46/SC4

Technical Committee 46/Subcommittee 4 (TC46/SC4) is the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Subcommittee responsible for technical standards used to facilitate interoperability of information services such as libraries, information centers, indexing and abstracting services, archives, and publishers. These technical standards include standards for information retrieval and interlibrary loan, applications of SGML, data elements directories, data formats, character sets, codes and user commands. - [Introduction]

Museum Computer Network

The Museum Computer Network is a nonprofit organization of professionals dedicated to fostering the cultural aims of museums through the use of computer technologies. We serve individuals and institutions wishing to improve their means of developing, managing, and conveying museum information through the use of automation. We support cooperative efforts that enable museums to be more effective at creating and disseminating cultural and scientific knowledge as represented by their collections and related documentation. - [Introduction]

The Museum Computer Network Standards and Controlled Vocabulary SIG is a working group that focuses on controlled vocabularies and other standards related to the application of computer technology in museums.

The US National Initiative for a Networked Cultural Heritage (NINCH) was established in May 1996, with the Museum Computer Network as one of the members. See Spectra, Summer 1996, 23(4), p5. August 1996.

The Russian Cultural Heritage Network (RCHN) is an information network which unites heterogeneous sources of cultural information according to uniform standards. RCHN also popularises and provides information about the cultural heritage of Russia.

A site giving information on a range of issues including metadata, distributed library systems and public library networking. Interoperability Focus also has a special interest in moving beyond the library sphere, specifically encompassing museums, archives, and other aspects of the cultural heritage, as well as Government and community information
