Sources of information: museums and the Internet
This page summarises some of the main publications concerned with museums and the Internet. It
focuses on books and journal articles, omitting references to sources that are only available
on-line on the Internet. It has been developed by the International Committee for Documentation of
the International Council of Museums ( ICOM-CIDOC ).
The references are grouped in five sections:

CULTIVATE is a project, funded by the EU, which aims to provide a European Cultural Heritage Network supporting the co-operation of archives, libraries and museums under the Fifth Framework Programme. The network intends
- to raise the awareness of the IST Programme for the development and the use of cultural heritage applications in all memory institutions in Europe.
- to enhance the quantity and quality of submitted proposals under the IST programme by various means like electronic information services, information days and individual advice for proposers
- to link European institutions with national administrative bodies and professional organisations and institutions in order to bring European activities and directives faster to the citizens and vice versa.

Making the Internet work for museums, by Sue Gordon, includes sections on getting connected, setting up a Web site, providing e-mail srvices and organisational issues. Published by the MDA , 1996.
Museum resources and the Internet, by Leonard Will, includes sections on the Internet throughout the world, principal Internet services, resources of use to museums, collaborative projects and the Internet within a museum. This is a revised version of a paper presented at the 1996 CIDOC conference in Nairobi.
