This page focusses on the Internet services of the International Committee for Documentation of the International Council of Museums ( ICOM-CIDOC ).
Overall co-ordination of Internet activity is provided by the Internet Working Group , chaired by Cary Karp .
There are several e-mail discussion lists covering topics of interest to CIDOC members.
This is one of a number of Web pages. These are listed on the CIDOC home page, and there is a facility to search the whole CIDOC site.
CIDOC also provides support to ICOM in the development of Internet services for the overall ICOM community. Further information about this support is given in a paper about the development of CIDOC.
The scope of the Internet and opportunities for museums to use it are outlined in the English version and French version of a brochure prepared for ICOM in 1995 by Leonard Will (former Treasurer of CIDOC).
In March 1995, the ICOM Secretariat and CIDOC held a meeting at the Museum of London to discuss the impact of the Internet. We focused on a number of issues, with our conclusions being reported to the meeting of the ICOM Executive Council later that month. A resolution about museum information was subsequently adopted at the 1995 General Assembly in Stavanger, focusing on the importance of the Internet and other communication networks. A further meeting was held at ICOM in Paris in September 1995. This led to the development of a policy statement on ICOM and the Internet which was adopted at the 1995 meeting of the ICOM Executive Council.
