CIDOC '98 CONFERENCE INFORMATION

THEME: DOCUMENTING AND COMMUNICATING CULTURAL AND NATURAL DIVERSITY

Documentation professionals have played an important role in creating and maintaining information which records the significance of heritage collections and is used to manage them. With the evolution of the Internet, this information is becoming increasingly important as a foundation on which museums can build "virtual" programmes and products to communicate their messages in new ways to local, regional, national and global audiences. The theme Documenting and Communicating Cultural and Natural Diversity provides wide opportunity for CIDOC members to confront these new challenges and opportunities while grappling with ongoing documentation issues. The theme complements the theme of the ICOM 98 General Conference: Museums and Cultural Diversity - Old Cultures, New Worlds.

SESSION SUB-THEMES

  1. Appreciating Diversity
  2. Knowledge Models
  3. Bridging Standards
  4. Beyond Data

A. Appreciating Diversity

The globalisation of our world requires increasing interaction between people from diverse cultures, beliefs and backgrounds. Museums must take this into account when making their information available. How can they ensure that their data is understood by culturally and ethnically diverse audiences? How can data provision address ethical issues such as privacy and natural or cultural sensitivity?

B. Knowledge Models

Museums have already created vast knowledge bases which will continue to grow in size and importance. However, present software tools do not facilitate retrieval of information from these knowledge bases in ways which respond to specific user needs. We require new communication tools based on more sophisticate knowledge models which incorporate automated intelligence to provide responsive retrieval. The session will review options and consider progress with pilot projects.

C. Bridging Standards

Standards were vital for museum documentation when cataloguing was its primary purpose. Standards remain a critical issue as we push beyond the horizons of this paradigm. As systems increase in complexity, the number of relevant standards increases and identifying which are most relevant becomes an issue. This session will review issues relating to current standards and look at the need to "standardise" standards. It will also provide opportunity for CIDOC members to share their experience of implementing systems in practical contexts.

D. Beyond Data

Contemporary museum documentation needs to be more than a catalogue of items. It should add value to raw item-level data and include contextual information which helps museums to communicate stories and issues to their audiences. This session will explore the challenges this poses and review approaches being adopted by CIDOC members.

WORKING GROUP SESSIONS

Working Groups play an important role in CIDOC's activities. Groups discuss and clarify issues and formulate standards and procedures for the museum community.

Working Groups will meet to address their agendas all day on Saturday 10 October and at other times during the conference, as indicated in the programme below.
