We can find aproximatelly 400 museums and collections of different sizes and structures. Most of them are private, but receive a very small budget from the Ministry of Culture and they don’t have any qualified staff for their activities. The documentation of these collections, when it is done, is done in their proper (often amateurish) way, as a central agent doesn’t exist. The ICOM Hellenic National Committee together with Patras University decided to deal for the first time with the diffusion of documentation for ethnographic objects and the documentation problems of these objects. So, they succeeded to finance the “Hellenic Network for the Diffusion of the know-how on the Documentation of Ethnographic Objects - Ethnomuseum-net”. Ethnomuseum-Net is a network realized by Patras University, Thrace University, ICOM Hellenic National Committee and the most important greek ethnographic museums, the Peloponnesean Folklore Foundation, the Museum of Greek Folk Art and the Museum of Greek Popular musical Instuments. The network was financed by the General Secretariat of Research and Technology of the Ministry of Development whithin the Operational Programme for Research and Technology and was supported by the Department of Popular Culture of the Ministry of Culture. This programme started on January 1996 and ended on April 1998. Its basic goals were to a) give solutions to the documentation problems of ethnographic museums, b)survey new technics for the digital documentation of the information, c) bring together the documentation specialists and the computer engineers working in this field and d) diffuse the existing knowledge on the documentation of ethnographic objects . During this time four working groups have been in operation : Working Group for the evaluation of the situation on documentation of Ethnographical objects in Greece. This group prepared questionnaires and diffused them with the support of the Department of Popular Culture of the Ministry of Culture, to survey the situation in documentation of ethnographic objects in Greece. After receiving the answers back, analysing and evaluating the questionnaires, the group organised two different seminars one for manual documentation and one for electronic documentation. The first seminar for the manual documentation was meant for museums or collections having more then 500 ethnographic objects, that they don’t document them or they document them inefficiently. Representatives from 20 museums and collections participated to the seminar. The seminar contained lectures on what documentation is, how to classify the ethnographic objects, the documentation procedure, the documentation Standards for ethnographic objects, as well as presentations of the manual documentation systems of five different museums and a workshop where participants were trained on the manual documentation. The second one for the electronic documentation was meant for museums or collections having more then 500 ethnographic objects and document manually their objects or use computers for other purposes than the documentation. Representatives from 20 museums and collections participated to the seminar. The seminar contained lectures on the documentation procedure, the documentation Standards for ethnographic objects, the new facilities of the computers and the electronic networks, as well as presentations of the electronic documentation systems of five different museums and a workshop where they were trained on the electronic documentation. The seminars were very succeessful for people that have participated, but we found out that a small number of museums decided to participate to the seminar comparing to the number of museums and collections that were invited. Working Group for the confrontion of the specific documentation problems of different categories of Ethnographical objects in Greece. The task of this group was to give solutions on the documentation problems of different categories of objects. For that the group started a pilot project dealing with the terminology and documentation problems of the Ceramic domestic utensils for the storing and conservation, the preparation, the measurement, the offering and the transportation of food. The group discussed the terminology and other documentation problems of this category of objects and made a list of the decisions taken, as well as a thesaurus of object names and their definisions and the bibliography used by the most important ethnographic museums. It was the first time that greek specialists in this field collaborated together and gave solutions acceptable by all of them. This list will be available throught the Department of Popular Culture of the Ministry of Culture. After the project was finished, this group is continuing to work, whithin the ICOM Hellenic National Committee and is trying to find other funds to finance its work. The next project will deal with the documentation problems of the wooden, metallic, stony domestic utensils for the storing and conservation, the preparation, the measurement, the offering and the transportation of food. When the project will be finished the resultes will be published by the ICOM Hellenic National Committee and distributed to the ethnographic museums and collections by the Department of Popular Culture of the Ministry of Culture. Working Group for the evaluation of the different activities in documentation of Ethnographical objects in international level and the contact with members of ICOM Hellenic National Committee working in this field. This working Group supported the CIDOC /Ethno Group for the publication of the International Core Data Standards for Ethnology/Ethnography, by financing a big part of the publication cost. It also organised several meetings between Greek specialists working in this field, who agreed on the greek terms to be used for the translation of the Standards in greek language, accepted them and proposed them to the Hellenic Ministry of Culture as the Standards for the Documentation of Ethnographic objects. Finally this Group published a Handbook for the documentation of Ethnographic objects. This publication includes the greek version of the International Core Data Standards for Ethnology/Ethnography, papers from greek specialists on different aspects of the documentation of the Ethnographic objects, as the documentation process, the classification etc, as well as presentations of documentation systems of the most important greek ethnographic museums. This publication will be distributed by the Department of Popular Culture of the Ministry of Culture to all the small museums and collections that want to document their collctions. Working Group for the implemantation of the new technologies on the documentation of Ethnographical objects. This Working Group was mostly involved with the evaluation of the existing electronic documentation programmes The most important documentation systems of the ethnographic museums were presented to the group who comment on them, made remarks on their developments and evaluated them. The different members looked into the possibilities for new collaboration between ethnographic museums, ways to find financing for extentions of their systems. This group has also collaborated with the group 1 for the organisation of the Seminar of electronic documentation adressed to ethnographic museums and collections.
