ETHNO WORKGROUP REPORT

During the CIDOC meeting at Stavanger, Norway, in summer 1995, the Ethno Workgroup (E.W.G.) presented the first Draft of the core data standards for documenting ethnographical, ethnological and anthropological objects, as well as a draft analysis of the National Reports collected during the survey of data fields used in different countries. This work had been prepared at the E.W.G meeting in Bled, Slovenia, in May 1996.

The main topics discussed during the E.W.G. sessions in Stavanger were: the way the Ethno Core Data Standards and the Survey Analysis will be reviewed, presented, published and distributed; the E.W.G. agenda up to the next CIDOC Conference in Nairobi, Kenya; the new projects to be undertaken after Nairobi.

The following resolutions were approved, namely to:
1. Collaborate with the Data and Terminology Workgroup so as to compare the Core Data Standards for documenting the ethnographical, ethnological and anthropological objects with the International Guide-lines for Museum Object Information and with the Africom Standards.

2. Collect more national reports up till the end of 1995 and, in the meantime, to elaborate a detailed analysis of the survey of the standards used in ethnographical, ethnological and anthropological museums in different countries for collection management.

3. Organize a meeting in spring 1996 to discuss the remarks that arose from the comparison with the International Guidelines for Museum Object Information and with the Africom Standards and to review the final version of the Ethno Core Data Standards and the Survey Analysis before publishing them.

4. The standards and the survey analysis will be published in Greece in 1,000 copies and a synopsis will be presented at the Nairobi Conference.

5. A copy of this publication will be sent to all E.W.G. members and national coordinators of the survey and to all ICOM National Committees.
A number of copies will be distributed at the Nairobi Conference and the others sent to the ICOM documentation centre in Paris. The E.W.G. board will collaborate with the CIDOC board on the Internet version.

6. Publish the standards in an ethnological journal of international standing.

Unfortunately, at the beginning of this year, the Ethno Workgroup chair, Alenka Simikic, was forced to step down for a while, for personal reasons, so the E.W.G. secretary will have to take her place till the next meeting, when the E.W.G. members will officially elect the new chair. We hope that we will be able to accomplish all the tasks decided in Stavanger.

At the next E.W.G. meeting which will take place in Athens, Greece, in June 1996, we believe that most of our members, as well as those from Greece and its neighbouring countries, will participate. We also hope that participants from different countries will present the documentation process used by ethnographical, ethnological, anthropological and open-air museums and departments, which have these kinds of collections.

Future plans

At the E.W.G. meetings, members proposed the following ideas for potential projects:

The Ethno Workgroup is still open to applications from new members. We hope that its future activities will be graced by new faces from other countries.
